Through programmes supporting the wellbeing of craftspeople in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia, OREA Verified brings opportunity and visibility to the informal handmade economy.
Three things this programme is trying to change
Craft is a foundational source of work for women worldwide, yet it has historically been dismissed as niche, informal or "women's" work. OREA argues for gender equality to be a priority in economic investment across the global handmade sector, so that investment actually benefits women.
Handmade work contributes more than half a million euro of value to global GDP, yet social and economic protection for those workers is the exception rather than the rule. We believe that, in partnership with brands, craft's enormous potential can be used to widen economic opportunity for workers everywhere.
Over the past year OREA has widened its scope to cover other kinds of manual work, such as waste recycling, in order to draw attention to — and create opportunities for — these overlooked and under-represented workers in the informal economy.
